Elmont Online notices of death usually with a short biographical account.

040226092356Residents of The Parkhurst Civic Association of Elmont, NY are deeply saddened by the death of their former President and neighbor, Livingston Chrichlow. We Thank You.  It is difficult to express in mere words how deeply we feel his passing.

Cheryl Lee, President of Parkhurst, remembers meeting Mr Chrichlow over 25 years ago at a civic meeting, “our relationship blossomed into a lifelong learning experience.   I can proudly say that I was mentored by the best” “… I will never forget his thoughtfulness, kindness, patience and wisdom.  When I complained about how busy I was, his mantra was “God first, family next and everything else would fall into place.””

In 2004, Mr. Chrichlow received the inaugural 1st Annual Elmont Online – ECAP Dr. Carter G. Woodson Award. “He was one of Elmont’s African American trail blazers” said Allyson Phillips, Chairperson of the Elmont Black History Month Committee. “He was among the first Black people to move to Elmont and survived cross burnings on his lawn in the 70’s. He exemplified human dignity and is surely one of the shoulders upon which the Elmont Online – Highlighting Success Black History Month Celebration is built.”

chetcollinsThe Parkhurt Civic Association, Chet's home civic, and the Elmont Community Coalition Council, an organization Chet presided over,  joined the Collins family and close friends in a bitter - sweet farewell at The Valley Stream Baptist Church on Saturday, September 8.  The church service comforted mourners with prayer, tributes and song.

The Going Home service began when Chet's close friend Deacon Carl Thompson led the congregation in an opening prayer and reading of the scripture.

It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Ms. Magaline Hanna.  Ms. Hanna was a long time resident of the Elmont Community and also served on the Elmont Elementary School Board.  The services for Ms. Hanna are as follows:

On behalf of the Elmont Online readership we extend condolences to the Collins Family on the passing of Mr. Chet Collins. Mr. Collins passed at approximately 12:15AM on September 4, 2012. In a brief conversation with Parkhurst President Cheryl Lee she could only say " Chet was more than a community leader, he was the brother I never had."

The Collins family informs the community as follows - Chet's wake will be held at Krauss Funeral Home, 1097 Hempstead Turnpike Franklin Square, NY 11010 on Friday, September 7, 2012:

Tia SophiaTia Sophia died yesterday at the age of 111. Some Elmont residents know Tia Sophia through the eyes and heart of her niece, Francina Roman.  It was just last Friday when Francina, with admiration spoke to me about her aunt.  Francina was emotional as she described Tia Sophia's role in her life “she ... she is my aunt ... we are planning her 112 birthday celebration next month,” and as if she knew something she continued “I hope she is still with us.”

There was a blending of love and celebration and pride and sadness in Francina’s eyes as she continued “My aunt", she said "is a proud lady and smart too." Francina recalls that Tia Sophia passed her citizenship exam during the Clinton presidency, well after her 90th birthday.  After listening to Francina you cannot miss the fact that Tia Sophia was a central figure in her life and someone who loved life and loved her niece.

Tia Sophia was born in the island nation of The Dominican Republic and was the longest living Dominican until yesterday.  Tia Sophia passed peacefully with Francina by her side.  The Elmont Online Community extends condolences to the Roman family.
