Northport @ Elmont

red-fireThe Elmont Fire 02 team completed their JSS Fall Season on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Northport.  For those of you that have followed the Fire’s season you will know this is the third time we have reported that the girls have completed their fall schedule! The last 2 games were added on at the last minute.

Saturday’s game was definitely not one of the Fire’s better efforts.  However, when you don’t bring your “A” game and you can still escape with a win you’ve done something right.  Although the effort was there the girls began very sluggishly which could be attributed to the early start and the weather which was sub-freezing with the wind chill.  With the game about 10 minutes old the Fire suddenly woke up due to a chant of “Let’s go Fire” from the fans which was led by Rich D. and his now famous bullhorn.  A beautiful corner kick led to scramble in front and a goal resulting in a 1-0 lead for Elmont.  The girls then missed multiple scoring chances for the rest of the half. The ball was on the Northport side of the pitch for about 23 of the 25 minutes in the first half.

Then at the half, the drama was out in full force as the coaches tried to rally the troops for a better 2nd half effort.  What was the drama?  You won’t read about it here, because what happen on the sidelines stays on the sidelines.

The Fire came out more focused for the 2nd half striking quickly in the 27th minute to extend their lead to 2-0. Northport was also on the attack having a number of scoring chances. But, the Fire’s defense turned them all away until Elmont was able to go up 3-0 in the 39th minute.  Eventually Northport did get on the board in the 46th minute after a defensive breakdown in the box to make the final score 3-1.

Again, it wasn’t pretty. But, a win is a win. By the way we have to give props to Bob the referee. Bob has been the referee for quite a few of the Fire’s games and he always does a magnificent job right from his patented World Cup style opening ceremony to the final whistle.  There have been times this season where calls from referees were a mystery. However,  Bob takes the time to explain his calls and his great with the girls during the game. Great job, Bob!

The Fire completed its fall season with a perfect 7-0 record ! There is still one game remaining in the NY Cup group play round. Check the team’s Facebook page for updates.
