NY Assembly, Senate seek flat budgets for chambers

ALBANY — New York's Senate and Assembly are proposing flat budgets for the coming fiscal year, including more than $145 million in salaries for legislators and staff.

In all, the 62-seat Senate controlled by Republicans is proposing a $91.9 million budget.

The 150-seat Assembly controlled by Democrats proposes spending $102.3 million for the 2012-13 fiscal year.

In almost every area, each chamber proposed no increase in spending going into the 2012 election year. The total proposed budget for the Legislature is $194 million.

The Senate wants to spend more than $66.7 million on salaries and other personnel costs, while the Assembly proposes $79 million.

The plans now go to Gov. Andrew Cuomo as he prepares his total state budget proposal for the Legislature.
