Car rolls into Adirondacks brook; woman, child die

JAY — A woman and the 7-year-old grandson she was driving to school have died after their car ran off a road and plunged into an Adirondacks river tributary.

State police say 75-year-old Theresa Caito and Henry Caito were reported missing in their hometown of Jay at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

They say searchers found Caito's 2007 Volvo submerged in a brook leading to the Ausable River in the community 120 miles north of Albany.

Rescuers used a cable to pull the car out of the water, freed the grandmother and child and tried to resuscitate them. Both were later pronounced dead at hospitals.

Troopers say they don't yet know how the accident happened.
