TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga has received an engraved powder horn dating back to the year the fortification was captured by the British during the French and Indian War.
Officials at the tourist attraction in the eastern Adirondacks say the artifact was recently donated to the fort, home to one of the world's most extensive collection of 18th-century military artifacts, including about 75 other engraved power horns.
The newly acquired artifact is inscribed with the words, "Joseph Stab His Powder Horne 1759," along with scenes of hunting and sailing ships.
Officials at the fort say Joseph Stab's identity remains a mystery so far. His name doesn't appear in any available military records from 1759.
Engraving powder horns was a common pastime for American soldiers during the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War.
