NY-based soldier from Florida dies in Afghanistan

FORT DRUM -- A 23-year-old soldier who had been based at Fort Drum, N.Y. was killed in Afghanistan when his unit was attacked with an explosive.

The Department of Defense said Sunday that Spc. Jeremiah Sancho of Palm Bay, Fla., died on Oct. 13 in Kandahar Province. He was with the Third Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, Third Brigade Combat Team.

Sancho had deployed in March. He joined the army in January 2010 and had come to Fort Drum in May 2010.

He is survived by his wife and mother.
