Tot dies; pill bottle used as a rattle

NEW YORK -- Police say a 13-month-old Bronx boy may have died from a drug overdose after his parents gave him a bottle of prescription pills as a rattle.

Police said an autopsy was being performed to determine the cause of death.

They say the baby was put in his crib around 9 p.m. Thursday and given a bottle of prescription painkillers to play with.

When the boy's mom stopped hearing it rattle, police say she went to check on him and discovered some pills had fallen out. She picked the pills up, gave the baby a bottle and put him to sleep. The parents found the child was not breathing Friday morning.

Police say the parents are talking with investigators. No charges had been filed as of Saturday afternoon.
