Manslaughter verdict in shooting by NY officer

WHITE PLAINS -- A former New York suburban police officer has been convicted of second-degree manslaughter in what he said was the accidental shooting of a friend.

A Westchester County jury found 31-year-old James Pileggi guilty on Wednesday.

Pileggi, an off-duty Eastchester officer, was handling his pistol outside victim Andre Everett's home in New Rochelle when the gun discharged on Nov. 3, 2009. Pileggi said he thought the gun was empty and was taking it apart to show Everett a laser sighting device.

Everett, standing nearby, was struck in the throat and killed.

Pileggi could be sentenced to up to five to 15 years in prison.

District Attorney Janet DiFiore said the shooting showed a conscious disregard for safety.

Pileggi resigned from the police department six days after the shooting.
