Listeria fear: Cantaloupe recalled in western NY

DEPEW -- A western New York distributor has recalled 4,800 packages containing cantaloupe because of possible listeria contamination connected to the larger recall of the fruit from a farm in Colorado.

Fruit Fresh Up Inc. of Depew says they were sold in the Buffalo area through stores and caterers between Aug. 31 and Sept. 11. They were labeled Cantaloupe Chunks, Cantaloupe Slices, Gourmet Fruit Salad, Small Fruit Salad, Small and Large Fruit Salad with Pineapple, Fruit Salad with Kiwi, and Fruit Trays. Authorities say no illnesses have been reported so far. Consumers should return or destroy any fruit they still have.

Listeria infections can kill young children or frail people. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Contaminated Rocky Ford cantaloupes shipped from Jensen Farms in Colorado had caused 96 illnesses and 18 deaths nationally as of Wednesday.
