Former Cuomo aide joins boutique law firm

ALBANY -- Steve Cohen, who resigned in July as a top aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, will join a boutique law firm and eventually set up a consulting business.

The firm of Zuckerman Spaeder confirmed Tuesday night Cohen, who served Cuomo for almost five years when he was attorney general and running for governor, will be assigned to bulk up its New York office.

Cohen is also expected to start a consulting business to advise companies on non-legal patters related to media strategy and government relations, although he will not register as a lobbyist, the firm confirmed. Cohen is subject to a two-year ban on lobbying officials in the Cuomo administration.

Zuckerman Spaeder is based in Washington D.C. and focuses on litigation and white-collar criminal defense. It currently has a small office in Manhattan.

Cohen worked in private practice before joining Cuomo, and earlier in his career worked as a federal prosecutor. As Cuomo's secretary, he was assigned earlier this year to run the successful push to legalize same-sex marriage.
