N.Y. Irene victims missing out on aid

ALBANY -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency says New Yorkers who suffered losses and damage in the wake of Irene aren't seeking the help they are entitled.

Coordinating officer Philip Parr said residents in many New York counties were eligible for help after the storm hit in late August. But many don't know that FEMA can aid with renters and homeowners who suffered damage to their homes.

He said some think that because they already cleaned up, they can't apply for assistance. Others worry that if they apply for aid, they'll be taxed. And some may think their neighbors need it more.

But Parr is encouraging registration at www.fema.gov to start the process. The site also has a list of eligible counties.

Home owners have 60 days to apply for FEMA assistance.
