NEW YORK -- A former hospital executive was convicted Monday of scheming to bribe New York state legislators by a judge who concluded that corrupt relationships came to dominate the businessman's work from 2003 to 2008.
U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff issued his verdict against David Rosen, 63, a month after he finished presiding over a bench trial that featured 29 witnesses and several hundred exhibits.
"It is fair to say that in coming to work, he was also coming to bribe," Rakoff wrote, finding Rosen guilty of engaging in a corrupt scheme to bribe three New York legislators: former New York State Assembly Anthony Seminerio, New York State Assemblyman William Boyland Jr. and New York State Sen. Carl Kruger.
Scott Morvillo, Rosen's defense lawyer, said Rosen was "devastated by the court's findings." A sentencing date was not immediately set. Rosen faces up to 70 years in prison for convictions on charges of honest services fraud, honest services conspiracy, conspiracy to commit bribery and to violate the travel act.
Prosecutors said Rosen launched a pattern of criminal conduct to protect and enlarge an empire of medical facilities he acquired after he rescued Jamaica Hospital from bankruptcy in the late 1970s at age 27, becoming its chief executive officer.
