Venus Williams Diagnosis Raises Awareness of Sjögren’s Syndrome

You have probably heard about tennis superstar Venus Williams dropping out of the U.S. Open, but you might not know much about the disease she has contracted. In Sjögren’s Syndrome, the body attacks its own moisture-producing glands. Symptoms include dry eyes, dry mouth, joint and muscle pain, and fatigue. The disease itself cannot be cured, though the symptoms can be treated. Sjögren’s is a relatively common autoimmune disorder—a disease where the body damages its own healthy tissues.
