Schumer: N.Y. bridge ills abound

ALBANY -- A new report finds New York has more than 2,000 bridges considered "deficient" and that number will rise dramatically once damage from Tropical Storm Irene is calculated.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer released a report that he says begs for passage of a federal transportation construction bill that's now pending in Washington.

Schumer says funding for the bridge repair and replacement is scheduled to expire at the end of the month. He says New York would lose $3.2 billion if the aid isn't continued.

The Democrat also says the work creates tens of thousands of jobs.

Schumer says the strength of New York's economic recovery and the future of its rural communities depend on a network of safe bridges strong enough for big trucks.
