Otsego joins NY counties to get federal storm help

ALBANY -- Otsego County in upstate New York is the latest added to the list of counties where people and businesses are eligible for federal help recovering from Tropical Storm Irene.

The White House estimated on Monday that Hurricane Irene will cost federal taxpayers $1.5 billion in disaster relief.

President Barack Obama declared a disaster in the state last week, opening the way for federal assistance that can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, help with the expense of cleanups, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs. The level can vary by county.

Already on the list as of Friday were Albany, Bronx, Clinton, Delaware, Dutchess, Kings, Essex, Greene, Montgomery, Nassau, Orange, Queens, Rensselaer, Richmond, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster and Warren counties.
