Police: 2 SUVs collide in upstate NY, 3 killed

COCHECTON -- Police say two sport utility vehicles have crashed almost head-on on a highway in rural upstate New York, killing three people and injuring a 9-year-old boy.

The Times-Herald Record of Middletown reports that a GMC Jimmy traveling west on Route 17B in Cochecton (koh-SHEHK'-tuhn) collided with an eastbound Ford Explorer shortly before 11 a.m. Monday. The accident happened 90 miles northwest of New York City near the Pennsylvania line in Sullivan County.

The driver of the westbound vehicle was killed along with two people in the eastbound Ford.

A passerby pulled the boy from the Explorer. He was taken to a hospital in nearby Harris.

The accident was on a sloping straightaway where there have been a number of speed-related accidents.

The names of the victims haven't been released.
