Soldier awaiting NY wedding dies in Afghanistan

TYRONE -- An Army specialist poised to return home in 12 days to get married in western New York was killed on patrol in Afghanistan.

Spc. Christopher Scott, 21, who left for his first tour overseas two months ago, died of wounds Saturday when insurgents fired on his unit in Kandahar province, the Department of Defense said.

Scott, from the Finger Lakes hamlet of Tyrone, was the eldest of three sons and was a military police officer assigned to the 101st Airborne. He had been based at Fort Campbell, Ky., before deploying in July.

His parents, Kenny and Tammy Scott, traveled to Dover Air Force in Delaware with their sons and his fiancee, Torey Oden, for the return of his remains.

Another military police officer, Army Sgt. Devin Snyder, 20, was laid to rest in June in her hometown of Cohocton. She was killed in a roadside bombing in eastern Afghanistan on June 4 -- two weeks before a scheduled visit home.
