- $725,000 in Grant Restorations Pending For Elmont (current position)
- Martins Says
- Community Reaction
It was literally hours after State Senator Jack Martins was declared the winner in the race for State Senator when a letter was sent to a State fiscal officer cancelling hundreds of thousands of State grants to communities in 7th Senate district. In the stroke a pen, funding to some schools, villages, hospitals and environmental projects were stopped. In many cases, the work was nearing completion and the loss of funding resulted in cuts and possible tax increases.
For communities like Elmont the grant funding was a crucial piece of budgets and the loss of the revenue stopped projects and impacted schools and local government’s ability to complete their plans.
Earlier this year, Senator Martins asked community groups to reach out to his office to identify funding promises made my his predecessor but were cancelled in light of his loss in the election. Millions of dollars were reported to the Senator. Some state leaders called the broken promises shocking and appalling. “Quite frankly, we’ve never seen anything like it. Just about everyone was promised money and there was none,” said an Albany insider.
This past week however, State Senator Jack Martins was able to bring back $725,000 of the grant funding promised to Elmont and restore some of what many have called “empty promises” made to Elmont by defeated Senator Craig Johnson.
