Driver charged in double fatal Schaghticoke crash

SCHAGHTICOKE ----- The man driving a car that crashed in the town Friday, killing two, has been charged with vehicular homicide, State Police said.

Troopers said Philip Dobert, 51, was drunk when he drove his Pontiac Firebird off of Route 40 and into a pole Friday night. The crash injured Dobert and killed his son, 20-year-old Kyle Dobert, and his son's companion, 20-year-old Alisha Schoonmaker.

Dobert was released Sunday from Albany Medical Center Hospital. He was charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and two felony DWI counts, as well as numerous traffic violations, troopers said.

One of the aggravated vehicular homicide counts stemmed from the multiple deaths, while the other was lodged because Dobert has been convicted of DWI in the last decade, troopers said.

Dobert was arraigned in Schaghticoke Town Court and remains at the Rensselaer County Jail without bail.
