Cops: NY sex crime suspect tried to torch himself

GRANVILLE -- Police say an upstate New York sex crime suspect tried to immolate himself in his car after learning he was under investigation.

They say 43-year-old Michael Currier of Granville went to the state police barracks in his hometown and threatened to harm himself. When troopers met him and followed his car to the parking lot, Currier locked the doors, doused himself in fuel and tried to light it with a match.

Troopers broke the windows and used a fire extinguisher to stop Currier.

He is charged with having sexual relations over the course of two years with a child under age 13. He's due back in town court on Friday.

Messages asking if he has a lawyer weren't answered by authorities Monday morning.
