Deputies: Teen faked near drowning

WAWARSING -- Sheriff's deputies say a 13-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital and was about to be loaded onto a rescue helicopter when he told paramedics he had just faked his near drowning at the urging of friends.

The Ulster County Sheriff's office, five rescue squads and an AtlantiCare MedEvac helicopter out of New Jersey responded to the reported drowning Monday in the town of Wawarsing, 80 miles northwest of New York City.

Deputies say the boy was transported to Ellenville Hospital and was to be transferred to the awaiting helicopter when he said he didn't really need medical assistance.

He was charged with falsely reporting an incident, a misdemeanor, and released to his parents with orders to appear in Ulster County Family Court on Aug. 10.
