Belmont Revitalization Kicks into High Gear
With the whirlwind of excitement in Elmont over County Executive Edward P. Mangano’s plan for the Nassau Coliseum and Belmont, local residents are continuing to advocate and fight for the Belmont Revitalization plan put forward by the Elmont Coalition for Sustainable Development and community leaders.
The focus for Elmont advocates continues to center around the South lot of Belmont Park which is currently a parking lot that NYRA has used for rented concerts and car shows over the years.
The Elmont plan for the South lot has been worked on for over seven years and has evolved into a plan that includes a walkable mall concept coupled with restaurants and a semi-professional Soccer stadium. The plan was championed by the Coalition, former Assemblyman Tom Alfano and local civic association leaders and community activists. The plan has been called by one civic leader, “a way to make Belmont a destination point and a sure fire way to help relieve property taxes.”
The initiative was put forth by the Coalition and has received strong community support. Since that time, the plan has been examined by State leaders including the Empire State Development Corporation. In fact, a scoping session attended by local officials at the Elmont Public Library outlined the different options for the lot. The plan that received universal support was the Coalition plan being supported by State Senators Dean Skelos and Jack Martins.
Coalition members and activists noted that the plan is not only workable, but has all the major ingredients for success. The transportation accessibility off the Cross Island Parkway, Hempstead Turnpike, and an open Long Island Railroad station at Belmont would make accessibility direct and have minimum disruption to community neighborhoods. Local planners noted that the South lot concept is, “a perfect combination of transportation points for residents and visitors.”
