A massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck Japan on March 11, 2011, and triggered a 23 foot (7 meter) tsunami that swept through cities and towns on the northeastern coast. It is the worst earthquake in Japan's recorded history. Scientists believe the physical impact of the earthquake moved Japan's main island by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis. A tsunami warning for countries all around the Pacific ocean has been issued and rescue teams from around the world are trying to help the millions of people who are still without food, water, and shelter.
