The winter 2011 edition of the “3rd Legislative District Report” is a newsletter prepared by County Legislator and Deputy Presiding Officer, John J. Ciotti.
Last week Elmont Online learned of an announcement in the Newsletter that unnerved some who read it. Specifically, the newsletter states “Legislator Ciotti attends the unveiling of the new Gateway Youth Outreach classroom at the Clara H. Carlson Elementary School”. Elmont taxpayers are asking, “Can a public school district giveaway building assets to a private non-profit?
Calls to Legislator Ciotti’s office indicate the newsletter is in error. “The visit to Clara H. Carlson was more directly related to a Disney on Ice Giveaway” and indeed the image reproduced here shows Legislator Ciotti and others holding an enlarged Disney on Ice ticket.
The GYO Board of Directors includes both the Sewanhaka and Elmont Superintendents of Schools. In a separate conversation with Elmont School Superintendent Al Harper, when asked about the unveiling of the new classroom, said he had no knowledge of the announcement in the newsletter and was emphatic in stating, “… no classroom space has been renovated or set aside for the GYO Program …”
The GYO program is an after-school program ran by Bronx resident, Pat Boyle, in Elmont.
