Teens and Parents Underestimate the Risk of Suicide, Study Says

A study in the February 2011 issue of Pediatrics says teens and parents can identify risk factors, but don’t believe teen suicide is a problem in their communities. Statistics continue to show the opposite: Canada's Ottawa Citizen reports as many as 8 percent of Ottawa youth have seriously considered suicide, with 15-to 19-year-old females averaging more than 200 emergency room visits per year for self-harm and attempted suicide. In the U.S., the teen suicide rate has risen dramatically after a fifteen-year decline, making it the third leading cause of death among youth and young adults ages 10 to 24.
