Teen Runaway Numbers Increase As the Economy Falls

The current economic recession has led to an increase in teen runaways and youth homelessness. While some teens leave home voluntarily, others are forced to leave because of problems with parents or their family’s economic situation. The most recent data available shows that Canada reported 48,000 runaways in 1999, while the U.S updated its figures to 1.6 million per year in 2002—and experts predict that the problem will only continue to grow.
