Former Sewanhaka School District Superintendent John R. Williams, Ed.D., has died. REFIT, an organization which Dr. Williams served with distinction, confirmed his death yesterday.
Dr. Williams served as superintendent in the Sewanhaka Central High School District between 2004 and 2006. During his short tenure Dr. Williams open the district to community input and use. He increased transparency on a number of issues including the use of Title I money at Elmont Memorial High School and Sewnhaka High School. In addition, he strengthened the adult learning programs and created the Virtual Academy to better serve students who were suspended. At the time of his departure in 2006, evidence suggested that students who participated in the Virtual Academy had rates of attendance that exceeded the home visits by instructors model and more importantly, the program was actually having a long range beneficial impact on student behavior and academic involvement.
"He was at most civic meetings" said Joyce Stowe, "I am saddened by his passing"
Legislator Solages in a message to Elmont Online said, “Dr. Williams was a dedicated educator who believed that students we able to achieve at the highest levels based on hard work. He has helped to contribute to legacy of excellence in the District.”
In 2007, Dr. Williams was appointed by the Amityville Board of Education as Superintendent of the Distinct where he continued to improve the delivery of education services to Long Island children.
On a personal note, Dr. Williams was a man with the courage to followed his heart and I will always admire him for that.
