Safety on Social Media

Teens are expert social media users, but not all share information safely or take advantage of built-in privacy settings, according to the Pew Research Center. Fourteen percent of teen Facebook users and 64 percent of teen Twitter users have public profiles, with information available for all to see. A third of teens have Facebook friends that they’ve never met in person. Those are important facts to consider because the vast majority of teens post identifying and personal information on social media: nine out of ten teens post their real names and photos of themselves, seven out of ten post their school’s name, half post their email addresses, and one in five post their phone numbers.
