Youth Murder Rate Drops

The homicide rate for young people ages 10 to 24 has reached its lowest point in 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since 1993, the rate has dropped continuously, though the decline is slowing down. Researchers believe changes in youth drug use, economic conditions, and the success of violence prevention programs contributed to the decrease. However, homicide remains one of the top three causes of death for young people. Among black male teens, it is the leading cause of death. Four in five youth homicides involve a firearm.
