Coming Out Gives Your Health a Boost

Scientists at the University of Montreal have found that coming out has benefits for the mental and physical health of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) people. In the young people studied, coming out led to lower levels of stress hormones and decreased rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout. Every day, GLBT teens come out of the closet and tell friends and family who they really are. Some receive acceptance and understanding, while others face intolerance. The coming out process is different for every teen, but many young people benefit by not having to hide the truth about themselves.
