Nassau Dems Schedule Redistricting Meetings

ELMONT NY - Members of the Nassau County Redistricting Commission who were appointed by the County Democrats have scheduled three meetings over the next few weeks at which the public can share their thoughts directly with the Nassau County Redistricting Commission.

Chairman MaroneyA spokesperson for the members appointed by County Democrats said “… these meetings are necessary because the Commission’s Chair, Frank Moroney, has made it clear that he has no interest in allowing the public’s wishes to influence the Commission!”

During the meeting held at County Legislative Chambers on June 29 Chairman Moroney refused to let the public speak until after the Commission completed his entire agenda. Moreover, he and members appointed by Nassau County Republicans refused the request of the Democratic Commission members to hold public meetings before proposed maps are drawn.

“Chairman Moroney frankly made clear his view of public participation when he stated that public comment at Commission meetings is “gratuitous!”” said the Democrat’s spokesperson.

In an email to residents the Democratic Committee said “We don’t agree with that, and we hope that you don’t either!
We believe the public deserves a fair and transparent redistricting process.”

The meetings are as follows:

  • Hempstead-Monday, July 23 at 6pm
    Kennedy Park335 Greenwich Street, Hempstead
  • Oyster Bay- Wednesday, July 25 at 5pm
JCC Mid Island Y, 45 Manetto Hill Road, Plainview
  • North Hempstead- Wednesday, August 1 at 2pm
North Hempstead Town Hall, 220 Plandome Road, Manhasset

“We are disappointed with the behavior of the Republican Commission members,” said Democratic member Bonnie Garone, “but we won’t let them stop us from engaging with the public, which we all are supposed to be serving. Even though they refuse to join us, we are holding meeting ourselves, because we want to hear what the public has to say.”

The Democratic members of the Commission also made clear that, with or without their Republican counterparts, they will strive for the highest standards in this process, including workingto keep communities intact and to ensure that new district lines will notreduce the opportunity for minority groups to participate in the politicalprocess and elect candidates of their choice.

Today, we are talking to people about sustainable economic development, because we think it's important to show support for key issues that affect our community - like places in the Elmont for young professionals to live, shop and be entertained; like keeping families closer together and rebuilding the economic and social pillars of the community.

Eyes On ...

joe smith

This crossed my desk today, “… and Aubrey, what’s the status of the Joe Smith case?  I hope it’s not forgotten?!”

Well EoL Reader, Smith was formally arrasted and charged with the crime on March 29 and I suspect from your emphasis on “?!” you are asking a deeper question.  Will Joe Smith like Vinny Prisco get away with the ongoing intimidation of Nassau County (Elmont) residents on behalf of the Long Island Republican establishment?  Will Republican dollar$ subvert the public good - again?  The answer remains to be seen.
