College Student Convicted of Hate Crime in Bullying Case

In September 2010, college freshman Tyler Clementi killed himself after being cyberbullied. In the days leading up to his suicide, Clementi’s private interactions with another man had been secretly recorded through a webcam by his roommate. That roommate, Dharun Ravi, was convicted last Friday of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation, which is a hate crime. He now faces up to ten years in prison. Participating in bullying or cyberbullying can lead to severe penalties in the U.S. and Canada. With an increasing number of suicides of bullied teens, lawmakers are working on creating even stricter laws to fight harassment.
