Elmont MUN Wins Big at Recent Conferences

Elmont Model United Nations has had a long history of success in Model United Nations competitions.  Rutgers and University of Chicago are just two in a long line of difficult competitions won in the past three decades that MUN has existed at Elmont.  Elmont MUN has achieved recent success in both of these competitions.

Back in November, Elmont’s MUN participated in the Rutgers Model United Nations Conference.  Elmont attended Rutgers as the nation of Bahrain, a small Middle Eastern nation that Elmont has represented many times in the past, including the historic Hague Competition when the team went to the Netherlands and came back victorious. Elmont students debated with other students coming from all regions of the world where they focused on pressing topics that plague in the international community.  At Rutgers, the following students were recognized:  Tejraj Antooa (Outstanding Delegate), Christina Kelly (Position Paper Award), and Zita Brack (Position Paper Award).

From January 31-February 4, 2007 at the Palmer House Hilton, Elmont Memorial was one of 105 schools to participate in this year’s Model United Nations at the University of Chicago.  Elmont achieved a first place finish, representing the country of Sweden.  With over 2,500 students competing, eleven Elmont students attended and an outstanding nine were recognized for excellence in their committee.  Elmont’s participants were:
  • Kimberly Waters – United Nations Children Fund
  • Gigi George – Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural
  • Fitgi Saint-Louis – Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
  • Christine Kelly – United Nations Development Program
  • Winston Waters – Economic and Financial
  • Ajoe Abraham – League of Nations
  • T.J. Antooa – Disarmament and International Security
  • Mason Nader – Special Political and Decolonization
  • Zita Brack – World Health Organization
  • Rayven King-Gray – European Union
  • Saumya Kurup – Commission on Science and Technology

MUN advisors and social studies teachers, Mel Kohn and Nkenge Gilliam are proud of their team’s accomplishments, “For each conference, the students prepare diligently for over two months.  It is wonderful to see that the students are recognized for their efforts.”

Congratulations Elmont MUN!!
