Twenty eight students from ELMONT MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL’S Class of 2007 and Class of 2008 have been named AP Scholars by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college level Advanced Placement Exams.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both or successful performance on their AP Exams. Almost 18 percent of the more than 1.4 million high school students in more than 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

Elmont Memorial High School students took AP Exams in May 2007 after completing challenging college-level courses. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of courses and examinations taken by students.

Three members of the graduating class of 2007 qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are Ajoe Abraham, Xiaoyu Chi, and Saumya Kurup.

One additional student in the class of 2007 and six students in the class of 2008 qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are Phillip Chin, Christina Daniel, Kevin Guinto, Syed Hassan, Alvin Mathew, Jeny Thomas, and Jessy Thomas.

Fourteen Elmont Memorial High students in the class of 2007 and ten students in the class of 2008 also qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Examinations with grades of 3 or higher. These students Leslie Anselme, Denisha Bacchus, Ashley Baffour-Addo, Devin Chanda, Courtney Cho, Kimberly Cime, Adrian Fernandez, Johanna Figueroa, Andrew George, Deanna Halls, Coleen Hepburn, Adrian Jarrett, Tolulade Jegede, Kimberly Leslie, Christopher Marshall, Ajay Nair, Lincoln Nembhard, Yossel Newman, Christopher Onuorah, Melissa Pierre, Tiffany Roque, Jordan Smith, Kimberly Waters, and Breanna Williams.

Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams. More than 1,400 institutions award a full year’s credit (sophomore standing) to students presenting a sufficient number of qualifying grades. Thirty-seven AP Exams are offered in a wide variety of subject areas, each consisting of multiple-choice and free response (essay or problem solving) questions (except for the Studio Art exam, which evaluates students’ original artwork).
