April 1, 2013-The Teen Poetry Slam is inspired by the work of Urban Word NYC. Urban Word NYC uses their writing workshops to build literacy and freedom of expression. After attending a few teen slams, Tammie Williams, Girls (Providing Resources for Improvement Dignity Empowerment) PRIDE Project spoke with Michael Corelli, Executive Director of Urban Word NYC and both agreed to bring the writing workshops to Queens and Long Island. “Some teens have a hard time speaking to adults about what they are going through in life”, says Ms. Williams. “We want teens to be able to put their thoughts down on paper instead of keeping it bottled up inside”. The African Center for Community Empowerment Girls PRIDE ProjectDirector Tammie Williams is proud to bring the inspiring teen poetry slam to Queens and Long Island. –Tammie Williams, Girls PRIDE Project Director.
