July 9th 3-on-3 Basketball Tourney Announces Great Additions to the Day in Football and Soccer Clinics!

The July 9th 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, powered up with POWERADE, being held at Dutch Broadway School in Elmont is getting closer, and tournament organizers are working overtime to make this year’s installment bigger and better than the past!  The tournament, now in its 6th year, hosts young people for outstanding 3-on-3 basketball games.  This year, the tournament is being held in memory of former community resident, activist and 9-11 NYC Firefighter David Dangerfield who passed away suddenly last Summer.

“So far tournament forms are flowing in and the teams are already on the courts practicing shots and getting ready for the big day,” said Scott Cushing tournament chairman adding, “registration goes on right until a half hour before game time on July 9th.”

Cushing also announced that the tournament will have two brand new additions for young people to participate in during the tournament. The additions were created for young people who may not want to play basketball. With that in mind, a football and soccer clinic was created to supplement activities!  The additions were included to bring more diversity to the day that has become the Summer event in the Elmont, Floral Park, Franklin Square, West Hempstead, North Valley Stream and Bellerose Village, Bellerose Terrace, Stewart Manor, South Floral Park and Valley Stream communities. Last year 2,300 people came through the day- a record in the area!

3on3pix3Outside of sports, many groups will be hosting events that will surely be crowd pleasers throughout the day. North Valley Stream’s own DJ Elzie Ross otherwise known as “Mr. Classy” and Elwinto Pierre Louis will be pumping up the crowd with music throughout the day as the official DJ’s for the 3-on-3.

The soccer clinic is promising to be a crowd pleaser as well.  “We’ve put together a partnership with the Elmont Soccer Club and the Long Island Rough Riders to put on a first class soccer clinic complete with an inflatable soccer quad field,” Cushing said noting “we also have some outstanding college soccer stars who are lending their considerable talents to this great day in Dowling College’s Ajani Jones and Jules Riche, LaSalle’s Diana Allen and University of Virginia’s Ahkeel Rodney.” Participants who want to get involved in the clinic simply have to come to the field on July 9th to get involved.

Elmont Soccer Club President Richard “Kiki” DeBrosse said, “this is a great day for all of our communities and Elmont Soccer is very proud to be working with the Rough Riders, the 3-on-3 tournament and our college stars to make this day a great success.”

“Soccer is a big part of our greater community,” said Ahkeel Rodney a member of the NCAA Division 1 Champion University of Virginia Soccer team adding, “whether you’re from Elmont and play in the club, the Floral Park Indians or the Franklin Square Raiders, the clinic will help you brush up your skills, teach beginners and most of all have fun! It’s a real honor for me to help give something back to our young people.”

“A real exciting addition to the day is our brand new football clinic. This partnership with the Franklin Square Warriors, Nassau Community College’s Football team and some great College football players in Florida Gator Chris Dunkley, Townson Tigers Jordan and Jared Dangerfield and Temple Owl Zamel Johnson will be a great highlight,” said Cushing. Just like the soccer clinic, the football clinic will run all day and participants only need to come to the field to participate.

Jamie Spanopoulos, President of the Franklin Square Warriors, said, “this is going to be a great day for the community and our young people. I’m so pleased the Warriors, Nassau Community College and our College Stars from around the area have teamed together to put this mini-clinic on for the community. Any skill level is welcome. We’re here to have a great time!”

Jordan Dangerfield, who plays safety for the Towson University Tigers, will be one of the college stars at the tournament who will be lending his considerable talents in teaching and running football drills for beginners and those who want to further develop their football skills a the clinic.  “I played for the Franklin Square Warriors and Elmont Cardinals and competed with the Titans in Floral Park and other great teams from through the area. July 9th will be a great day for everyone to come together in a spirit of community we’ve never seen and I can’t wait!” Dangerfield will be flying in from Florida and will be joined by Florida Gator wide receiver Chris Dunkley at the clinic.

The biggest part of the day will be the 3-on-3 action. Tip-off for basketball will be at 9:30am on July 9th. Tournament participants must register their teams a half hour before their respective divisions tip-off. The 5th and 6th grade divisions tip off at 9:45am sharp.  To receive more information on the tournament, you can simply go to Facebook and become a friend of “Dutch Tourney David Dangerfield.” So far, over 4,400 young people from throughout the area have “friended” the tournament.

Marvin Lee, referee chairman for the Tournament noted, “the games are always competitive and a lot of fun. There is also a basketball clinic for those who want to develop their skills and be the Kobe Bryant’s of tomorrow. The bottom line is that this is a fun day for everyone!”

Bethpage Federal Credit Union will be hosting the 2nd annual Slam Dunk Competition that day as well. Floral Park Coordinator Michael Soudmand said, “all of the events have great sponsors like Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The competition is always a great highlight and most of all a lot of fun for everyone. From the dunkers to the audience, it’s going to be great,” said Soudmand.
