Library Board takes strong action.
Joe Smith, husband of Sandra Smith who is an aid to Senator Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre), was arrested on Friday March 29, 2013. He surrendered with his attorney, Richard Debrosse of the Elmont Youth Soccer Club, and who also is an outspoken supporter of the controversial plan endorsed by Senator Jack Martins (R-Mineola) to build a minor league soccer stadium in Elmont. Smith was formally charged for his attack on Elmont resident Carl Achille at the March 2013 Coalition for Sustainable Development meeting.
Smith was ordered back in court to appear before a judge on April 10. Community residents familiar with the incident hope Smith’s arrest leads to a safer, more tolerant environment where reasonable people can disagree without fear of attack.
The Elmont Library Board has also taken strong action against Smith and the Coalition. The Board voted to suspend the Coalition and Smith from using the library. “This is a strong message to everyone, and I commend the Board for taking swift action” said one community leader who witnessed the attack. The Coalition and Smith can appeal to the Board for reinstatement.
