Though high property tax was the centerpiece of the education debate here in Elmont, as it was throughout Long Island, the community made an unambiguous statement about its total commitment to public education. Residents understand the promise, the purpose and all the costs associated with public education.
Pamela Byer, and Frank Ragona were elected to the Elmont School Board and Tania Lawes to the Library Board. For the third time (in as many attempts) and despite strong support from Clara H. Carlson, Covert Avenue and Stewart Manor Schools (820 to 358) the community denied the candidacy of Patrick Nicolosi who is seen by many as a divisive influence in Elmont. Mr. Kenneth Williams, recipient of the State’s highest recognition afforded School Board Members, the Masters of Boardmanship, was also defeated after serving with distinction for 9 years. Dr. Anthony Batista, Library Board, lost his seat.
