A mother from Long Island left Haiti the day before a devastating earthquake rocked the nation. Her son stayed behind. Elsy and Mao Guibert spoke with Good Day NY about their ordeal.
"When the earthquake came I was in my grandmother's building watching TV. I was trying to figure out what was going on. I ran outside. My grandmother was on the ground. I got her up," said Mao. "I tried to communicated with as many people as I could (on the phone) but it was impossible."
"I couldn't hear him well. You would never imagine what just happened. Then five minutes later a girlfriend called and told me about the earthquake in Haiti. I got really worried," said Elsy.
Mao says he did all he could to help the people around him affected by the earthquake.
"We had a pick-up... we tried to help people...but after a while they were getting aggressive."
"It took me eight days to get out. I went to the Dominican Republic and flew to Miami."
