When I saw the video of Magaly consoling and helping the injured, I felt a great sense of sadness and pride. Here is yet another great example of a local community member giving of themselves so freely and without hesitation to a cause much bigger than their own personal being. This tragedy has hit so close to home in our communities and not a day goes by without a family stopping to talk to me about family that has been lost in the quake or the injured.
Magaly was an honoree of my “Women of Distinction Program” a few years ago for her ongoing work with young people, social work and the greater Haitian community. She is a quiet woman who works hard, doesn’t ask for the accolades and makes a difference. When I saw her face comforting the children and parents on NBC News, I couldn’t help but quietly say to myself “go Magaly- you make your family and community proud.”
