2006 Woman of Distinction, Magaly Polo, on board USNS Comfort

Dear Editor:

Monday night, I was watching the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams when a piece came on about the ongoing relief operations in Haiti. This particular part of the newscast centered around a hospital ship anchored off the coast of Haiti that was giving 24 hour medical care and emergency operations to those injured in the earthquake.

magaly_ta_dsThe report was very emotional, and it gave you a glimpse of just a small part of the effort for the people of Haiti. During the report, a spotlight was placed on a special woman that is no stranger to the Elmont, Franklin Square, Floral Park, West Hempstead and North Valley Stream communities. That person was my good friend Magaly Polo who served as President of “HAFALI”- the Haitian American Families of Long Island.

Right after the earthquake, Magaly closed up her house and volunteered to go aboard the very hospital ship NBC profiled and is now anchored off the shore of Haiti. For weeks, she has been giving critical care to the injured people of Haiti along with teams of Doctors and Nurses.  As the reporter for NBC showed, it is volunteers like Magaly who are making the difference.

When I saw the video of Magaly consoling and helping the injured, I felt a great sense of sadness and pride. Here is yet another great example of a local community member giving of themselves so freely and without hesitation to a cause much bigger than their own personal being. This tragedy has hit so close to home in our communities and not a day goes by without a family stopping to talk to me about family that has been lost in the quake or the injured.

Magaly was an honoree of my “Women of Distinction Program” a few years ago for her ongoing work with young people, social work and the greater Haitian community. She is a quiet woman who works hard, doesn’t ask for the accolades and makes a difference.  When I saw her face comforting the children and parents on NBC News, I couldn’t help but quietly say to myself “go Magaly- you make your family and community proud.”

Sincerely,

Assemblyman Tom Alfano

What do you do about a public official that has betrayed the public trust? Many times, the official resigns in public disgrace after a news story that uncovers the scandal. Others quietly leave and are never heard of again. Some continue in office thinking that nobody will ever find out.
