In the Town of Hempstead, it is redistricting time, and a majority of the people living in the Town do not even know it is happening.
That is exactly what the Republican controlled Town Board is hoping for, as they attempt to dilute the voting voices of over 125,000 minority residents.
The Town Board has created a map that allows for only one minority majority district. They did this NOT because they want to, but because Federal Laws require them to.
The Valley Stream Democrats, TOHDC and other civic organizations know that there are enough minority residents to compose a second minority district. That is why we proposed the FAIR DISTRICT MAP.
Not only does this map protect the rights of all minority voters, but it also keeps other communities of similar interest together like The Five Towns.
The Republican controlled Town Board did not allow for a fair, open and transparent process when drawing their map. Hearings were never held in each district to allow for residents to comment and interact with the process.
Skyline Consulting, a Republican campaign strategy firm, the same firm that drew the Nassau County Republican map, worked behind the scenes with the Town Board to create the map that is being voted on April 9th.
