State Senator Jack M. Martins announced this morning that he has appointed two Elmont residents to serve on his district office staff. Elmont Library Board President Tania Lawes and Haitian community leader Franklin Thomas will be serving the Senator and the residents of the 7th district. The move by Martins keeps yet another promise of having an aggressive and community oriented staff to meet the needs of all neighborhoods in and around the 7th Senate district.
“Tania and Franklin are two outstanding people who have made helping others throughout Elmont, and the greater community, a part of their way of life. Their unique and important perspectives on issues that impact our neighborhoods will be critical as we move forward to revitalizing our communities, cutting taxes and creating jobs. I’m very proud to have them serving the community and the 7th Senate district,” said Senator Martins.
Lawes is a 31 year resident of Elmont who graduated Elmont Memorial High School and Tuskegee University. She was named by the Franklin Square Elmont Herald as its “Person of the Year.” In addition, Lawes is very active in Girl Scouts, Black History Month Committee, 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, President of the Elmont Library Board and as Director of the New Hope Lutheran Church After-School Program.
“When I met Tania, I knew this was a person who works incredibly hard for her community and has real sense of what is needed by working families throughout the area,” said Senator Martins adding, “having her talents for the entire 7th Senate district is great news for everyone.”
Lawes said, “This is an opportunity to help people in a broader way and for me to continue giving back to the community I have called home for 31 years. When Senator Martins asked me to enter public service, I was very excited to join a team that is committed to people. I can’t wait to get started.”
Thomas is a graduate of the Dutch Broadway and Elmont Memorial High Schools. In addition, he is currently studying business and politics at SUNY Old Westbury. Thomas was also a scholarship award winning student for academics and athletics. Many throughout Elmont know Thomas from playing College football and local athletic leagues.
Franklin is on the Executive Committee of the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, Coordinator of the Haiti Food and Clothing Drive, member of St. Boniface Church and a Black History Month Awards volunteer.“Franklin is a go-getter with incredible energy and focus. His dedication to helping people and work within the Caribbean community made him a natural to serve as a Community Liaison,” said Martins noting, “his connection with area youth and working families made him a natural for service. He’s a great addition to the staff.”
“This is a real honor to not only serve my community but to make a difference for people throughout the 7th Senate district,” said Thomas adding, “Senator Martins has kept to his commitment to the district to have a staff that reaches into every neighborhood and is committed to making a positive difference in people’s lives. I’m very proud to be on his team.”
