We Need Bernie and Todd

todds-sOn Tuesday, April 19, residents of the gerrymandered 9th Senate District vote to replace former Republican Senate Leader and now convicted felon, Dean Skelos. For me, the choice in the 9th Senate District is easy – Todd Kaminsky. Yes, Todd is a democrat and so am I but that’s not the issue that informs my decision.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Long Island has nine senate districts and the voting age population (VAP) of democrats outnumber republicans by large numbers. How then is it that the Long Island senate districts are generally “miss-represented” by Republicans? In a word, gerrymandering!

Now, I know that discussions about gerrymandering are nuanced and for many tedious. However, it is the key to Republican “absolute” power on Long Island. During the 2010 redistricting cycle, Republicans took full advantage of their absolute power and gerrymandered the Elmont Community into three state senate districts.

Cracking means dispersing a group of voters into several districts to prevent them from reaching a majority. Packing means combining as many like-minded voters into one district as possible to prevent them from affecting elections in other districts. Stacking occurs when low-income, less educated minorities are grouped together to create a perceived voting majority but are placed in the same district as high-income, more-educated white voters who turn out in greater numbers.

In redistricting terms, the Republican Party stacked, packed and cracked our community leaving the “individual” voter with the “right to vote” but without the greater and more significant “right to elect a representative of their choice”.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely! Todd represents the first opportunity we have as a community to break the absolute power of Republican miss-representation.

bernies-sIn addition to this very important senate race, we Democrats are deciding on which candidate to elect as our standard-bearer for the Democratic Party in the national election for President.

One candidate argues pragmatism the other argues aspiration. This primary vote for aspiration, vote for Bernie! Pragmatism preserves the status quo; it favors the tried and true over ambition and hope!

So join me on Tuesday, April 19 and cast votes for Bernie and Todd! It is time we break the republican strangle hold on Long Island and respectfully walk away for the Bush-Clinton-Bush quarter-century!

Today, we are talking to people about sustainable economic development, because we think it's important to show support for key issues that affect our community - like places in the Elmont for young professionals to live, shop and be entertained; like keeping families closer together and rebuilding the economic and social pillars of the community.
