Elmont Memorial High School Principal John Capozzi invited to speak at Senate Hearings

Elmont Memorial High School Principal, Mr. John Capozzi, and Assistant Principal Brian Burke, traveled to Washington D.C. to testify before the Full Committee Hearing on Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Reauthorization:  Improving America’s Secondary Schools.  The ESEA is the main federal law affecting education from kindergarten through high school.

In March 2010, the Obama Administration proposed that the law be revised to provide incentives for states to adopt academic standards that prepare students to succeed in college and the workplace, and create accountability systems that measure student growth toward meeting the goal that all children graduate from high school and succeed in college.  As the principal of a high achieving secondary school, Mr. Capozzi was invited to testify before Senator Tom Harkin (D) of Iowa, Chairman of the Committee on ESEA Reauthorization, as well as 11 other Senator members of the committee.  Mr.Capozzi credited the entire Elmont faculty and staff when asked about  Elmont Memorial High School’s success. He testified, “The driving force behind Elmont Memorial’s success is our belief that all children can learn.  Research clearly shows that the number one factor in student achievement is teacher effectiveness.  We understand that our students’ success is directly correlated to our highly effective and dedicated teachers who share this belief.”

Mr. Capozzi’s remarks will help to shape the success of our nation’s public schools based on the success of our school, Elmont Memorial High School.
