Hempstead Turnpike Rezoning Plan Caput?

According to a recent letter from Councilman Ambrosino, the efforts and vision of the people of Elmont were the “foundation” of the proposed rezoning plan for Hempstead Turnpike.  Why then has the “mortar” of our rebuilding plan, permitting residential over retail development, been completely stripped away without any notice?

If years of blood, sweat and tears from the Elmont community was not enough of a mandate to have this central provision included, then how can we be optimistic that showing up to a Town Board hearing on January 24th, minutes before a resolution will be drafted and submitted produce the result that we have all consented would be the right thing for our residents and businesses, now and for generations to come?

If Councilman Ambrosino is stating that we need to once again re-confirm our support of mixed-use development at this hearing, then of course we will do so. We just hope that the “watered down” plan is not a fait accompli, and that his request for more “participation” is genuine in that the community’s long held position of supporting residential over retail development will be re-inserted into the new zoning plan for the Hempstead Turnpike corridor.

The time for in depth “visioning” is over; the time for appropriate action by Councilman Ambrosino and the other Town Board members is at hand.  The Elmont Chamber of Commerce remains committed to permitting residential over retail development along the Hempstead Turnpike corridor.

open letter-02

Today, we are talking to people about sustainable economic development, because we think it's important to show support for key issues that affect our community - like places in the Elmont for young professionals to live, shop and be entertained; like keeping families closer together and rebuilding the economic and social pillars of the community.

Eyes On ...

joe smith

This crossed my desk today, “… and Aubrey, what’s the status of the Joe Smith case?  I hope it’s not forgotten?!”

Well EoL Reader, Smith was formally arrasted and charged with the crime on March 29 and I suspect from your emphasis on “?!” you are asking a deeper question.  Will Joe Smith like Vinny Prisco get away with the ongoing intimidation of Nassau County (Elmont) residents on behalf of the Long Island Republican establishment?  Will Republican dollar$ subvert the public good - again?  The answer remains to be seen.
