Our Field of Dreams – “The Revitalization of Belmont Race Track"

debrosseJack and Dean, if you build it they will come!  I grew up in the Elmont Area, and I remember what it once was. I remember what it was like in the Seventies when movie stars and professional athletes from all over the world would come to my little Elmont.

I remember Saturday mornings playing baseball at the “cage”, (the little baseball field right off the Cross Island near Hempstead Turnpike). I remember being in the outfield and watching the stretch limousines driving by and wondering which movie star has come to my town?

Please upgrade your installation of Flash. Elmont Online requires versions 9.0.115 or higher.

As a small child, in my oversized uniform, I remembered that astral feeling that if the “Superstars” and the “Prize Athletes” are coming to my town – then my town must be special.

The feeling of pride about my little town gave me that nostalgic feeling that I was part of something great.

However, as I got a bit older and “off track betting” became popular - my little town was no longer “chic”; and my little town was no longer “a la mode”. The limousines started to dwindle. The Stars began to fade, and my little town was no longer special.

Psychologically, since I was no longer living in a special place, then part of me felt that I was no longer “special”. My little town no longer intrigued people because people forgot Elmont. They forgot the history, they forgot the joys, they forgot the pride, and… they forgot me.

“This little light of mine…no longer shined”.

However, still with love of my community, I went off to college, then subsequently Law School. And unlike many of my friends, after college…I returned.

Now I am an adult, married to a beautiful wife, and wonderful children; I wonder do my children see their community like I do? I wonder, would my children return to Elmont after College? Would they want to raise my Grandchildren in Elmont? Or would they laugh at me when I would talk about Elmont past?

Well, lighting may strike. The vision is in place. That wonderful tract of land, “Belmont Race Track” that once was the “Pillar of Pride” in my community, has a chance to hold this little town of mine high once more.

That pillar in my community can restore pride in Elmont once more.

An opportunity has come whereby Belmont Race Track can have a - Casino nightlife – a mall – fancy restaurants – hotels and a Sport Stadium. In short, we can have all the benedictions of Times Square and all the charities of the Meadowlands walking distance from our homes.

This means that I can hold my beautiful wife’s hand while walking a few blocks to enjoy an unprecedented quality of life… as we grow into old age.

Moreover, my children’s youth will be enriched by the experiences of the revitalization.  They will have the opportunity to play “the beautiful game” at a “beautiful facility”.

Teams and Families throughout the Island and the Tri-State area would chomp at the bits to come to Elmont. Thereafter, our guest rather than going immediately home they would stay to take advantage of all that Elmont would have to offer.

In addition, with this influx of new businesses, jobs for young people would be created.

Thousands will come, Jack and Dean. If you build it they will come!

Belmont Race Track, our field of Dreams.

This is a longtime dream of mine. A sports stadium in Elmont would be the answer to a lot of the problems that we are encountering as it applies to growing soccer in our community. Soccer has been an integral part of my existence since I moved into Elmont in 1990. I am the father of four children who played on Elmont travel teams. I have coached and continue to coach Elmont travel teams since I want the children to enjoy the beautiful game that I enjoyed playing as a child on my native island of St.Kitts. I have been the fields coordinator, assistant registrar, assistant treasurer, vice president, president of the Elmont Soccer League then the Elmont Youth Soccer Club. I enthusiasticall y support the building of a Sports Stadium that would accommodate a few soccer fields, inside or on the grounds of the stadium.
Lets take this endeavor seriously and make it happen.

A soccer stadium in Elmont, would be like a dream come true. As an Elmont resident with a son who loves and plays soccer, I strongly support the revitalization of our community.

Soccer has become one of the most popular sports in the island and just the thought of having a turf field in our own backyard gives me the chills.

Please make the dream of thousands of kids come true.

As a Queens resident that borders Elmont, I can only see a stadium benefiting children, families and the community. Together our accomplishments are limitless. The time is now! Soccer is exploding here in America. We have children that love and breathe soccer. We need a Field of Dreams in our community. Soccer is hardwork, technique and most of all teamwork. The children and their families are showing their passion and commitment to soccer. With a collaborative effort, we need to respond to our children and community’s demand. The game of soccer and a soccer stadium can solve so many issues. Today, our children need an outlet for healthy reasons. Too many children are fighting obesity. The children need to exercise, eat healthy, stay away from drugs and they need to be directed in a positive, productive, progressive and healthy fashion. Soccer can be the vehicle and the place is our new stadium. As our children and community challenge us with new demands, we need to respond by meeting and going beyond their expectations. A stadium in Elmont, will bring a Field of Dreams to our local community. A stadium would expand our family community, bring more excitement, help old businesses, bring new business and generate an even more inspiring special pride. Let’s make it happen!

Great article.

The novel idea of revitalizing Elmont and southeastern Queens with the construction of a sports stadium, casino, a mall, hotels and a host of restaurants is tremendous. The benefits economically for our community are duly noted from previous comments. However, the biggest gain that can be attained from this project is the impact it will have on the children of today and future generations.

Growing up in southeastern Queens in the late 90s and early 2000s, I reminisced about the 40-minute bus rides and hour walks to be part of something children nowadays take for granted....a place to play. Living in an area without the adequate facilities (ex. P.A.L, YMCA) left the door open for many criminal activities to creep in and steal some of us from a bright future.

A stadium at Belmont Park is needed and well overdue. The social implication of its impact for Elmont and surrounding neighborhoods is evident. Let's bring back the mystique Elmont once had. Who knows, instead of waiting for stars to come into town, we might be breeding stars of our own with these changes.

Born and raised in the South Bronx i had no Field to Dream on. For the last 25 years i have lived the Dream through my Amazing husband eyes who has always been full of hopes and dreams. He makes it his business day and night to make sure the kids from all over have a place to go to play this wonderful game of Soccer. Richard has given us the piece of mind to know that all of our children are in a happy and safe environment. It's amazing to see so many children having fun being around each other and parents looking on with joy. These children travel all over to play their hardest and have accomplished so much that it is time and only right that we give them their own Field to Dream on...Make it happen!!

I am not an Elmont resident, but I know that my children will definitely reap the benefits from the construction of a stadium at Belmont. Not only will this have a tremendously positive effect on the athletes themselves, but Elmont and its surrounding communities will benefit from the economic revitalization that will ensue.

I wholeheartedly agree that a stadium or some type of sporting venue would increase the economic viability of the surrounding Elmont area. In the early 80's, I served as the mascot for my brothers Elmont Soccor team when they won the championship at the location we call the sump, across from Elmont Memorial High School. Let's bring back the good old times. Were you better off 15 years ago?

Wonderful article Richard. Well said. We just recently enrolled my daughter in the intramural Elmont soccer program. She is already building on her love and passion for the game. This is due largely because of the family atmosphere that the club provides. It would be a blessing as well as a financial boost to the Elmont community and the surrounding areas.I hope and pray that this stadium comes to fruition.

A sports complex in Elmont! Just the thought brings chills up my spine. I met Richard when we came from another town to play for Jigs that was about less than a year ago. I had a very long conversation with this guy. No convincing us to make the move to a great place. Richard and Jigsy welcomed us with open arms and treated us like family. Our academy and club is heart warming it is the meaning of the word family. Our best interest is the kids. I observed these two men and
humbleness in them day in day out out on the soccer field for "the kids" struggling to help our babies grow and love a sport
which is basically known all over the world. What they have is
contagious as all our volunteers , families and staff have the same vibe. Our passion is to get kids to implement and as one
family we accomplish this everyday . Just the thought of this complex in our community will bring a great community into a grand one and I believe we have the ability to do it. As I prayed one day that I would join a great soccer club and my prayers were answered. I will pray and strive for this soccer complex to happen in Belmont.

What a story by Richard! I live in a neighboring town, but my daughter plays for the Elmont/JIGS Academy Soccer Club. I have the pleasure of coaching her and her teammates in this wonderful community of fantastic people. The revitalization of Belmont would do wonderful things for the community. Let's get it done! If you build it they will most definitely come...and can the ghost of Secretariat be far behind? Watching that youtube clip of the 1973 Belmont Stakes gave me chills as I remembered watching that race as a 10 year old boy with my Dad. Let's make this vision a reality!

What a wonderful idea to get kids active & out doors instead of sitting inside all day. It will benefit everyone in the area. Good luck in getting this done.

As a relative newcomer to the Elmont Family, I can't get over the enthusiasm and committment that the families here have for soccer! The kids show up every weekend ready to play, its time that the adults in charge show that that kind of committment pays off. We have played all over Long Island in the past and see the sense of pride from other communities when we visit. Building a stadium is a win win for everyone, especially our children!

A stadium will be a great economic boom to the Belmont area. Employment and new money will flow into the community and help increase the property values as well. This idea should not be passed up under no circumstances.

Stadium all the way.

Soccer has become one of the most popular sports in the Elmont/Queen community. It is not only an enjoyable sports, but also offers valuable benefits to the athlete. Soccer players benefit physically, mentally, and learn the value of teamwork, while having family time.

A turf field at our disposal will help when scheduling league games and practices. Having a turf field, the weather does not matter, we can play rain or shine, day or night. Keep the children busy and active, which is vital to their overall health.

A soccer complex will also provide economic benefits to our community!

As an Elmont resident with a son and daughter who play soccer, I strongly support the revitalization of our community.

It will be phenomenal!! And as Tom Rocco said, "Just Do It"

I truly empathize with the author of this feel good story. I too grew up in a small L.I. town and understand the importance of staying connected to the joys of your childhood, hoping to pass them on to your off spring. Although I am not an Elmont resident, I do reside in one of the neighboring towns and will reap the benefits that the proposed enterprise will bring. I hope that others in the Elmont community will see this as a positive revitilization effort and welcome it.

Bloomberg & New York City dropped the ball when they allowed the Jets & Giants to continue to call New Jersey their home. The Dinkins administration allowed the USTA to take a good part of the Flushing Meadows Park and erect a stadium that is basically used for just 2 weeks a year. What do these 2 acts have in common?
I will leave the reader to judge, however I do believe that an opportunity exists to capitalize on our potential to to be tremendous asset to eastern Queens in general, and Elmont in particular.

Build a stadium at Belmont Park!
Besides the all the wonderful things it can do for our community, a stadium will precipitate a tremendous revitalization in business and real estate, which in turn means more jobs and more revenue for our state.
Provide the seed and we will make it pay.

Just do it!

5th Precinct Update 3.27.2012

Legislator SolagesAfter the disastrous move by the County Executive and the Republican Majority to close half of the police precincts in Nassau County, the Democratic caucus was successful in pushing Ed Mangano's back against the wall so that he gave us a signed guarantee that there would not be one less patrol car in any neighborhood. The agreement additionally stated that there would be more law enforcement personnel in all of the policing centers.

As Newsday reported, “Democrats also demanded that the amount of borrowing be cut nearly in half from the $50 million requested by Mangano, saying the $26.5 million would cover the cost of officers expected to retire."

The Art of Listening

Senator MartinsLike many of you, I’m up early, reading the news and making breakfast before the rest of the family wakes up. Later, I manage to grab a few minutes to get ready between my wife and four children before embarking on daddy’s a.m. taxi service. This day, I’m a little late to an 8 a.m. meeting with union officials to discuss issues impacting them, but I’m sure I’ll make up the time somewhere in the day’s schedule.  By 9:30 a.m., I’m at a grammar school in another part of the district explaining how a bill becomes law to 200 fourth graders. They prove remarkably well-informed and pursue an analysis as to what recent legislation is likely to work and what they believe will not. I take mental notes.
