Drinks, Low Lights and Soft Music

Mixed NotesSenator Craig Johnson is hosting a few Elmont residents at a rally at Mixed Notes Cafe in Elmont. Perhaps coincidentally, it's across the street from Beth David Cemetery where Johnson apparently collected signatures for his petition ("I Can See Dead People").

The invitation from the Nassau County Democratic Committee titled "Make Elmont's Voice Count" misses the point or more sinister, presumes Elmont residents (Democrats, Republicans, Independents, immigrants, renters, or home owners) are average consumers of nonsense.  Fortunately, none of the aforementioned labels define intellect, shortens memory or measures aspiration.

In our piece "Is This People Over Politics?"  it's comments from residents like Susan Moore, Carolyn Busch, and Ian Clark that "Make Elmont's Voice Count".  It's Roy Rambarran and Paula Khan's remarks in "Is This People Over Politics? Part 2" that ring out as Elmont's Voice.  It's Tiffany Harris, Azzy Lan and James' comments in "I can see Dead People" that is Elmont's voice.

The invitation from NCDC says "Senator Johnson fought to clean up the Elmont water supply".  How?  He held one hearing.  The hearing only restated a pre-existing fact -  The Water Authority was already well along with plans to repair old pipes.  And I bet ya, if you were one of the residents who complained about "brown water", you still have brown water.  The invitation continues, "Now he needs us to fight for him!"  Why?  We are still burdened by his false promises and anti-Elmont votes.  Remember:

  • The NYC MTA bailout tax which local small business owners now pay while Elmont bus services are in jeopardy.  Where is the bailout for the N6 on Elmont Road;
  • The $100,000 promised but not delivered to the Sewanhaka Central High School District for restoration of bus services to private school children.  We taxpayers are footing the bill now;
  • The almost $150,000 promised but not delivered to the Elmont Union Free School District;
  • The $100,000 promised but not delivered to the Elmont Public Library; and
  • The countless $$$$ promised but not delivered to a variety of other local community organizations

We can add to this list the fact that he sold us down the river on Belmont.  Read the IG Report on Aqueduct and pay particular attention to page 160, it puts him at the center of a scandal in the bidding process.

In the mean time he appears to have turned his back on his hand picked candidate Mimi Pierre-Johnson.  Her "friend" Solages is hosting a rally at his house for her at nearly the same time just a few blocks away from Mixed Notes.  If this wasn't serious it would be utterly hilarious.

My message to Elmont is simple, as we belly up to the bar tonight with Craig, remember a few drinks, the right lights and soft music make everything look and sound better - even broken promises and lies.  We Big (D)emocrats must pick our representatives carefully.  We cannot allow party label and party bosses to rule us.  "Make Elmont's Voice Count"?  We spoke loud and clear during the primary and apparently Jay Jacobs and the NCDC did not hear us.  Let's tell them again.

Craig Johnson is one the biggest bums in Albany. I,a life-long Democrat has recently changed my Party affiliation to Ind. These Democrats in Albany has done nothing for me but burden me with more taxes. Albany needs a change and it's gonna start w/ me making that change,come Tuesday November 2nd.

Today I received a letter about what Craig Johnson has done to Elmont. I too am very offended that Mr. Johnson thought he could buy off Elmont with cheap liquor at a bar. How about working on cutting my tax bill Craig? I also have a Craig Johnson story. One of his volunteers put a sign on my lawn without my permission. That takes guts. But I guess when you have dead people's signatures on your petitions, you will stoop to anything. count this Democrat as voting for Jack Martins!

For the first time in my life I am voting for a Republican. Craig Johnson isn't just a sorry character, he let me down. How can we allow this guy to represent us. I'm voting for Martins.

I remember the legal roadblocks Johnson & Johnson put in place to prevent Patrick Nicolosi from running. Thankfully the manuever was unsucessful and we have a legitimate candidate from Elmont running. But I have not forgotten. I will be voting accordingly on Tuesday.

5th Precinct Update 3.27.2012

Legislator SolagesAfter the disastrous move by the County Executive and the Republican Majority to close half of the police precincts in Nassau County, the Democratic caucus was successful in pushing Ed Mangano's back against the wall so that he gave us a signed guarantee that there would not be one less patrol car in any neighborhood. The agreement additionally stated that there would be more law enforcement personnel in all of the policing centers.

As Newsday reported, “Democrats also demanded that the amount of borrowing be cut nearly in half from the $50 million requested by Mangano, saying the $26.5 million would cover the cost of officers expected to retire."

The Art of Listening

Senator MartinsLike many of you, I’m up early, reading the news and making breakfast before the rest of the family wakes up. Later, I manage to grab a few minutes to get ready between my wife and four children before embarking on daddy’s a.m. taxi service. This day, I’m a little late to an 8 a.m. meeting with union officials to discuss issues impacting them, but I’m sure I’ll make up the time somewhere in the day’s schedule.  By 9:30 a.m., I’m at a grammar school in another part of the district explaining how a bill becomes law to 200 fourth graders. They prove remarkably well-informed and pursue an analysis as to what recent legislation is likely to work and what they believe will not. I take mental notes.
