The More They Know, The More They Say NO

stadium protest

Rain did not stop dozens of Elmont, Valley Stream and South Floral Park residents from meeting to hear about the plans for the south lot at Elmont's Belmont Park.

"This is the first time I am hearing about a soccer stadium and I live right here" said one attendee pointing to her home across the street for the south lot.

"I have visited the soccer stadium website ... the website is slick and fancy but the plan is bad for Elmont", said another resident.  "A soccer stadium does not compliment the historic Belmont Park and it will impact property values for the neighboring homes".

Library Board Unanimously Exonerates Achille

Carl Achille, the Elmont resident and business owner who was assaulted by Joe Smith was absolved of all responsibility for the March 11 incident at the Elmont Public Library.

Some may recall that Joe Smith attacked Achille after the Elmont Coalition for Sustainable Development (ECSD) meeting on March 11, 2013.  The coalition is chaired by Smith’s wife and local Republican employee-operative, Sandra Smith.

“This is the only reasoned outcome” said one observer.  The board also suspended ECSD for violating library policy.

The board decision overturns the acting director’s recommendation that both Smith and suspension of Achille be suspended from the library.

Coming Out Gives Your Health a Boost

Scientists at the University of Montreal have found that coming out has benefits for the mental and physical health of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) people. In the young people studied, coming out led to lower levels of stress hormones and decreased rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout. Every day, GLBT teens come out of the closet and tell friends and family who they really are. Some receive acceptance and understanding, while others face intolerance. The coming out process is different for every teen, but many young people benefit by not having to hide the truth about themselves.

Nassau Lawmaker cautions the NY Governor

Carrie SolagesNassau Lawmaker cautions the Governor a proposed Belmont Soccer Stadium would create an economic void that harms Elmont and all of western Nassau County

(Mineola, NY)  - Nassau County Legislator Carrie' Solages (D-3rd District) today cautioned New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo that plans to create a semi-professional soccer stadium on the grounds of Belmont Park in Elmont do not meet the needs of the surrounding community of hardworking families seeking to protect and strengthen their quality of life.

In a letter to the Governor the lawmaker states, “In an era when Big Sports is about huge profits and franchise deals, Elmont seeks something other than being the gateway to a corporate soccer stadium. The public relations blitz currently assaulting our neighborhoods touting the alleged benefits of a stadium fail to acknowledge the reality that Elmont would receive minimal benefits from a sports arena.  A stadium would neither strengthen our real estate values nor generate neighborhood economic growth in Elmont. A stadium would, however, create an economic void where the real benefits are found inside the stadium’s gates and among the absentee investors who would enjoy millions in profits.”

Elmont FD Reminds Residents

Check Your Smoke & CO Detector Batteries When Changing Clocks on March 10th

With Daylight Saving Time beginning on Sunday, March 10 at 2:00 a.m., we will need to move our clocks ahead one hour. It will also be a good time for residents to check the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to make sure they are functioning, and replace the batteries, if needed says the Elmont Fire Department. The Department also recommends that people dust or vacuum the detectors to keep them free of debris, so they can work properly.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an estimated 890 lives could be saved each year if all homes had working smoke alarms. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

“A smoke alarm can save lives, but it is of no use if it has dead batteries,” said Elmont Chief of Department Angelo Chilelli. “Now is the perfect time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and always follow the manufacturer's instructions for testing smoke alarms and replacing the batteries.”

NFPA and Elmont FD smoke & CO detector tips:

Test detectors at least once a month by using the test button.
Check the batteries every six months, and change the batteries every year. If a battery is starting to lose its power, the unit will usually chirp to warn you.
Vacuum or blow out any dust that might accumulate in the unit.
NEVER borrow a battery from a detector to use somewhere else.
NEVER paint a smoke or CO detector.
Install at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home, including the basement, and in or near each sleeping area.
Smoke detectors should not be installed near a window because drafts could interfere with their operation.
Families should also develop and practice a home fire escape plan.

For more information on smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and other information on fire safety and prevention, visit the National Fire Protection Association website at www.nfpa.org.

Today, we are talking to people about sustainable economic development, because we think it's important to show support for key issues that affect our community - like places in the Elmont for young professionals to live, shop and be entertained; like keeping families closer together and rebuilding the economic and social pillars of the community.

Eyes On ...

joe smith

This crossed my desk today, “… and Aubrey, what’s the status of the Joe Smith case?  I hope it’s not forgotten?!”

Well EoL Reader, Smith was formally arrasted and charged with the crime on March 29 and I suspect from your emphasis on “?!” you are asking a deeper question.  Will Joe Smith like Vinny Prisco get away with the ongoing intimidation of Nassau County (Elmont) residents on behalf of the Long Island Republican establishment?  Will Republican dollar$ subvert the public good - again?  The answer remains to be seen.
